A 59-year-old American visitor has died after becoming unresponsive during a scuba diving excursion in the waters off Antigua's North Sound, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a family vacation on the twin-island nation.
The man, who last resided in North Carolina, was vacationing in Antigua with family members. He arrived in the country on June 5 and was scheduled to depart on June 13.
According to police, around 3:15 p.m. on Monday he was participating in a scuba diving activity near Red Head and Rabbit Island when he became unresponsive. He was subsequently transported to the mainland near Shell Beach, where emergency responders were alerted.
Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived at the scene and transported him to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre. A medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival at approximately 4:36 p.m.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. An autopsy is expected to be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
The Police Administration extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.
The deceased's identity has not been formally released pending notification of next of kin. His family, who were travelling with him on the island, now face the devastating experience of losing a loved one far from home. The investigation remains ongoing.
