Former government senator Clement Antonio is set to take up a diplomatic posting in Beijing, China, in June, closing a turbulent chapter in his domestic political career and opening a new one on the international stage.

Antonio was sworn in as Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Works in July 2025, a role that placed him at the centre of government infrastructure and procurement. However, his tenure in that ministry was short-lived. Just months later, in October 2025, Antonio was reassigned out of Housing and Works to the Ministry of Education, Sport and Creative Industries, with Prime Minister Gaston Browne framing the move as part of a "rotation policy aimed at broadening their experience."

The reassignment came as the so-called Vehicle Gate scandal was engulfing the Ministry of Housing and Works. Prime Minister Browne acknowledged "unauthorized government vehicle transactions" in his November 2025 Independence Day address, saying the administration acted "immediately and decisively" by ordering a Ministry of Finance review, applying corrective measures, and demanding restitution to the Treasury. Opposition figures and members of the public questioned whether the response went far enough, with calls for a full independent inquiry going unheeded.

Antonio subsequently resigned from the Senate entirely in December 2025. His departure, it is now confirmed, paved the way for this diplomatic assignment to Beijing.

The appointment draws on Antonio's existing familiarity with China relations. He was part of a high-level ministerial delegation to Shanghai and Hangzhou in 2025, where he underscored the value of cultural diplomacy in strengthening long-term ties between the two countries, with both sides expressing enthusiasm for expanding student exchanges, boosting tourism, and enhancing cooperation in the arts and culture sectors.

The Antigua–China relationship has grown considerably since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1983, deepening across health, agriculture, infrastructure, education, and cultural exchange. Antonio's arrival in Beijing is expected to advance cooperation across those sectors as Antigua and Barbuda also prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November 2026.
