A routine ferry crossing between St. Kitts and Nevis turned into an emergency rescue operation on Monday after an inter-island vessel began taking on water and partially submerged shortly after leaving Basseterre — but thanks to a swift response, every person on board was brought to safety.

All 47 passengers and crew members aboard the Apple Syder were rescued safely following a rapid response by the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard and other emergency personnel, according to the St. Kitts & Nevis Observer.

Initial reports indicate the ferry encountered difficulties minutes after departing on its scheduled voyage to Nevis, prompting authorities to launch an emergency rescue operation.

Videos shared on social media showed passengers wearing life jackets floating in the water as rescue crews pulled them to safety while the vessel slowly sank.

Authorities said there were no reports of fatalities or serious injuries.

Government Monitoring the Situation

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew said he had been briefed on the incident, while Nevis Premier Mark Brantley confirmed he was monitoring the situation and receiving updates.

The cause of the incident has not yet been disclosed, and an investigation is expected.

The incident has stirred memories across the Federation of the MV Christena disaster of 1970 — the catastrophic sinking of a St. Kitts-Nevis ferry that claimed more than 200 lives and remains one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in Eastern Caribbean history. That an incident of this nature in 2026 ended with every passenger and crew member rescued safely is a testament to the importance of life-jacket protocols and a rapid emergency response.

For the wider Eastern Caribbean — including Antigua and Barbuda, where inter-island ferry travel remains a vital link between communities — the near-miss serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of rigorous vessel maintenance, safety inspections, and emergency preparedness on the region's waters.

The findings of the forthcoming investigation will be closely watched to determine what caused the Apple Syder to take on water and whether any preventable failures were involved.
