A supermarket owner is nursing injuries after being violently assaulted inside his own business premises during an early morning incident at Wilkinson’s Cross in St. John’s on Friday — the latest in a troubling string of violent incidents recorded across the capital in recent days.
Police are investigating an alleged assault on the supermarket owner after he was reportedly struck in the face with an iron pipe. According to reports, an unknown man entered the supermarket and began behaving aggressively toward the owner, who reportedly asked the man to leave the premises.
The situation escalated when the man allegedly attacked the businessman and struck him across the jaw with a piece of iron pipe before fleeing the area.
Police later responded to the scene and conducted a search of the surrounding area, but the suspect was not located. Investigations into the incident are ongoing and no arrests have been made.
The assault on a business owner inside his own establishment is deeply concerning and reflects a pattern of brazen daytime violence that has gripped St. John’s in recent weeks. Within the past week alone, a young man was stabbed outside a phone store on St. Mary’s Street, two Russian sailors were beaten and robbed on Popeshead Street in the early hours of the morning, and a man was hacked to death in the Mock Pond community — all incidents that together paint a picture of a capital city where public safety is under increasing strain.
Anyone with information about Friday’s assault at Wilkinson’s Cross is urged to contact the St. John’s Police Station or call Crimestoppers anonymously at 800-TIPS (8477).
