Nurses at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre have completed a round of medication safety refresher training, reinforcing the clinical best practices and patient safety protocols that govern one of the most critical responsibilities in hospital care — the administration of medication.

The training sessions, facilitated by the hospital's Pharmacy team in collaboration with a Clinical Educator from the Learning and Development Unit, featured interactive learning and discussion grounded in real-world clinical scenarios. The approach gave nurses the opportunity to apply their knowledge to practical situations rather than reviewing procedures in the abstract — a method widely recognised as more effective for reinforcing clinical competence and identifying gaps.

Hospital officials said the initiative forms part of the SLBMC's ongoing professional development programme, which aims to improve patient safety, support continuous learning among healthcare staff, and maintain high standards of clinical care across the institution.

The medical centre underscored the importance of the training with a clear message: "Every dose matters. Every patient matters."

The sessions are part of a broader push at the SLBMC to strengthen institutional capacity across multiple dimensions — a drive that has also seen the hospital recently launch mandatory Ebola preparedness training, introduce online appointment request services for outpatient and radiology patients, reconstitute its board of directors, and honour the late Consultant Surgeon Dr Subbiah Radhakrishnan with a staff remembrance walk.

Medication errors remain one of the leading causes of preventable patient harm in healthcare systems worldwide. By investing in regular refresher training that keeps frontline nursing staff current on protocols, the SLBMC is taking a concrete and measurable step toward reducing that risk for the patients who depend on its care.
