Coach Daren Sammy Backs West Indies to Deliver as Test Series Against Sri Lanka Gets Underway in Antigua

West Indies Test head coach Daren Sammy has declared his squad ready for the challenge ahead, expressing confidence in his team’s preparation as the first of two Tests against Sri Lanka bowled off this morning at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

“We Know the Surface”

Speaking on the Good Morning Jojo Sport Show ahead of the first Test, Sammy drew on the West Indies’ familiarity with the North Sound venue as a source of confidence, while outlining the specific tactical work the management team has undertaken in preparing for the visitors. “We know the surface at Sir Vivian Richards and what it brings. We watched the four-day games played there and the pace and bounce that’s in the wickets. We know the attack Sri Lanka brings,” he said.

Pace Arsenal Ready to Fire

The coach pointed to Antigua’s traditionally favourable conditions for pace bowling as the platform upon which West Indies intend to build their challenge. “They’ve got some quality batters, hence we have our pace attack in Alzarri, the two Josephs and the experience of Roach. We’ve been really tactical for the bowlers in being consistent on that six metre length, watching film on the opposition batters and where we could exploit their weaknesses,” Sammy said.

Batting the Area of Focus

Sammy was candid about where the team needs to improve, pointing to batting application as the priority for this series. “For the batting, which is something that has been letting us down, is to be able to bat for long periods,” he said — an acknowledgement that the West Indies’ ability to build substantial innings will be just as important as their pace attack’s ability to dismiss Sri Lanka’s top order.

Sri Lanka’s Spin Threat Addressed

Sri Lanka’s strength in spin bowling has been a well-documented concern for West Indian batters in recent formats, and Sammy confirmed the coaching staff has worked on addressing it specifically. “This is an area where we know Sri Lanka is quite strong and an area that has been a concern for us, especially in the ODI format. But if you look at Antigua and let’s say the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the threat has always been the pace attack because of the conditions that we are faced with, so we’ve challenged ourselves in that department,” he said.

The Squad

Cricket West Indies named a 15-member squad for the series on June 16. The first Test bowled off at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, with the second Test scheduled at the same venue from July 3 to 7.

The full squad is: Roston Chase (Captain), Jomel Warrican (Vice-Captain), John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, Shai Hope, Amir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Anderson Phillip, Kemar Roach, and Jayden Seales.

The two-match Test series represents the pinnacle of Sri Lanka’s home series tour of the Caribbean, coming after the visitors have already engaged West Indies in both One Day Internationals and T20 Internationals. For cricket fans in Antigua and Barbuda, it is the marquee occasion of the summer — Test match cricket at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, under the watchful gaze of the great man himself, and a West Indies coaching staff that arrived at North Sound saying, simply: “We ready.”
