The Senate of Antigua and Barbuda is now fully constituted, with Fabian Jones sworn in as the Barbuda Council's representative in the Upper House — completing the 17-member chamber following the April 30 general election and returning one of Barbuda's most familiar parliamentary voices to the Senate for a third consecutive term.
A Third Term for Jones
Jones, a long-time member of the Barbuda People's Movement, was reappointed to the Senate on the advice of the Barbuda Council to the Governor-General. He was first appointed to the Upper House in March 2018 and served a second consecutive term beginning in 2023. His return for a third term makes him one of the most experienced Barbudan voices in the nation's Parliament and ensures continuity of representation for the sister isle at a moment when the constitutional battle over Barbuda's land and governance sits at the very centre of the national political conversation.
The timing of Jones' swearing-in is significant. Barbuda is currently engaged in an active and intensifying legal dispute with the central government over land rights — with the Barbuda Council firmly opposing Cabinet's plans to establish a land registry and begin selling Barbudan land in what the Council describes as an unconstitutional attempt to strip Barbudans of their communal land rights. As the Council's appointed Senate representative, Jones will carry that fight into the Upper House as the legal proceedings continue before the courts.
