The Antiguan football community is mourning the loss of one of its quiet but enduring figures, as news spread of the passing of Ickford "Ocean" Carr of Pares Village — a speedy winger from a golden era of club football who helped lay the foundation upon which the game in Antigua and Barbuda stands today.
The Antigua and Barbuda Football Association announced the passing of Carr on Sunday, June 7, extending sincere condolences to his family, friends, and former teammates.
A Speedster on the Right Wing
Carr is fondly remembered as a speedy right-winger for the Pares Football Team during the 1970s, where he played alongside the likes of "Warrior" Benjamin, "Bucko" Barnes, and the Looby brothers: Durban and "Knowledge." He was an admired and respected player within his community, and his passing is deeply felt by all who knew him on and off the pitch.
"The Game You Love Was Shaped by Men Like Him"
The ABFA's tribute captured something important about what footballers of Carr's generation meant to the sport's development in Antigua and Barbuda — not stars chasing fortune or fame, but men who gave themselves to the game for the love of it.
"The ABFA family joins the community of Pares in mourning the loss of 'Ocean,'" the association stated. "To the young players of today, I say this: the game you play and love was shaped by men like him — players who gave their energy and passion to football at the club level, without fanfare or fortune. It is on the backs of our past players that Antigua and Barbuda Football is built. We honour them, and we honour 'Ocean.'"
The ABFA offered its prayers and condolences to the Carr family, saying: "May Ickford 'Ocean' Carr rest in peace. Gone, but never forgotten."
For the community of Pares, the passing of "Ocean" Carr is the loss of a local hero — one of those men whose name, talent, and spirit defined what it meant to represent a village on a football pitch in an era when club pride and community identity were inseparable from the beautiful game.
